DESCRIPTION AKA The Elephant Beetle. Belonging to the Scarabaeidae family this rhinoceros beetle is one of the worlds largest beetles.The black elytra ( wing casing ) surface is covered with fine hairs giving it a tan/yellow appearance. with powerful legs and large tarsal claws. Note the strong looking horns protruding from the head. The larvae take up to three years to develop whilst the adult beetles which feed on sap or rotten fruit only live for one - three months.
