SPECIES Dryocampa rubicunda
ORIGIN North America
FRAME 14.5x14.5xD5cm Made from recycled products.
DESCRIPTION AKA Rosy Maple Moth. Wingspan 4-4.5cm. Gorgeous pink and lemon colours on this very small silk moth from the Saturniidae family. As the name implies the larvae feed on a variety of maple trees found from southern Canada down to Florida. These moths live up to nine months and are common enough that they can be considered a pest as huge numbers can defoliate trees. These are nocturnal moths. This aposematic or bright coloration may attract collectors but it warns predators that it may be a poisonous meal. Please note that some specimens have a 'sun-bleached' look to their wings. Dark spots may also be present on their abdomens. This is considered normal for this species.
Hand reared. Colour and markings vary slightly on each specimen.
