SPECIES Ornithoptera meridionalis Male
ORIGIN PNG / Indonesia
FRAME 20x20xD5cm Made from recycled products.
DESCRIPTION AKA The Southern Birdwing. With a wingspan of around 9 cm it is the smallest of the Ornithoptera but undoubtedly one of the most stunning. Typical habitats to include primary and secondary lowland rain forests, usually at altitudes of 20-200 m. They carry a smaller number of eggs per generation than that of the other larger birdwings and the larvae feed on the Aristolochae vine. They have the most glorious colouring, note the very thin hind wing tails that have small arrow head tips ( they are the only birdwings that have tails ) . The main threat to this butterfly is habitat loss and by ranching the wild population is protected.
As we rarely receive this beautiful butterfly and have sold out we thought our clients may want to view this rare species.
This butterfly will be framed upon receipt of order. Framing will take approx 6 weeks.
