SPECIES Chrysiridia ripheus ventral + Graphium weiskei
ORIGIN Madagascar / Peru
FRAME 20 x 20 x D5cm Made from recycled products.
DESCRIPTION Chrysiridia ripheus . Rainbow metallic colours on this beautiful day flying moth. Also known as the Sunset moth for obvious reasons. The colours on the Madagascan sunset moth's wings are produced by the conjunction of two optical phenomena namely optical interference and inter scale reflection. It is endemic to the Island of Madagascar where large migrations are seen in certain months. The bright metallic colours are a warning to predators of their toxicity.
Graphium weiskei - AKA Purple Spotted Swallowtail. This small graphium is one of only two butterflies we have with a shade of purple, hence it is one of our most popular frames. The unique colouring of mauve changes to pink under certain lighting and accompanied by subtle shades of blues and greens make this butterfly a must for any collector. Though it was Carl Ribbe who first described this butterfly, the name derives from the one who collected the first sample, the German naturalist Emil Weiske.
