SPECIES  Morpho cypris

ORIGIN   Colombia

FRAME   20x20xD5cm Made from recycled products.

DESCRIPTION  The Morphos are Neotropical butterflies found mostly in South America. This male Morpho cypris has the most dazzling iridescent blue colouring highlighted with a chain of white markings on its fringed wings. A little smaller than Rhetenor helenor but a brighter blue. There are 29 species of Morpho. Their iridescent colouring is a result of the microscopic scales on the wings which reflect light. The underside is a dull brownish colour usually with various eyespots which deter predators when wings are closed and also provide great camouflage when perched on trees or bushes. This and the helenor butterfly outshine other Morphids in their incomparable gloss, the cypris perhaps even more so. it is said the blue is of such ethereal purity and such intensive lustre that all other colours appear dull in comparison.

Please note all Morpho butterflies are mounted without abdomen. The abdomen of the Morpho emits a grease like substance which stains the backboard. All professional mounts will not have an abdomen attached.

This is truly the most spectacular butterfly in our range and a must for any collector.
